The countdown is on to Tokyo 2020. While the Games of the XXXII Olympiad – defiantly still known as Tokyo 2020 – have been delayed by 12 months, Japan has risen to the colossal challenge of staging the Games during the Covid-19 pandemic, establishing a new set of guiding principles and rules to shape a safe international event.
Commissioned by Australia Post back in 2019, Visua’s stamp design for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics reflects the aesthetic essence of host country Japan, through its simple, bold, clean graphics. Deliberately ambiguous, the four interlocking figures represent both Olympians and Paralympians alike, coming together in the spirit of the Games from all nations.
The colours reflect those of that most recognisable of Olympic symbols – the five interlocking rings – which also influenced the custom hand-drawn typography. The typography and background Os of the stamp are designed to join top and bottom, as well as left and right, a further expression of the linking Olympic rings.
